Ups & Downs

Day 46

Emma is continuing to do well but had a minor setback on Monday.  She was getting tired of being on the cannula so she was put on the CPAP.  She had started de-satting a little more and was just exerting more energy to breathe than they would like to see.  The doctors want to make sure she continues to gain weight, so if she is working too hard and burning too many calories, they try to help her out by giving her more breathing support.  She has been doing well on the CPAP and yesterday the doctors discussed possibly trying the cannula again today, so we'll see what happens.  It is nothing definite and they may want to give her another day or two, but it looks like it will be soon.  So even though this is a little step backward, it is definitely to be expected and she was on the cannula for 3 days, which is quite an accomplishment.

Emma has continued to gain regularly and is up to 940 grams (2 pounds, 1 ounce).  Her feeds were also increased to 6 mL/hour and she is doing great with them!

Emma's vocals have been improving too - she has graduated from just squeaking to some full blown crying!  It is great to hear, especially since for the first 5 weeks of her life we weren't able to hear her when she was intubated.  It is amazing to watch these milestones develop.

I know I haven't uploaded pictures in a little while but I promise to put some up soon!

  1. Not a step backward, just a little rest that she so deserves. We all need a little rest once in awhile! Miss Emma is a strong and determined little lady. She certainly has Memere Lavoie's strength and fortitude. You and Matt are amazing parents - thank you for allowing us all to share this journey with you.
    Love, Fran and Michael
