FAQs

Q. How long will Emma be in the NICU?
A. We aren't really sure yet, but the general guideline we are told is that it's usually around her original due date, which was February 8, 2011.  We are hoping it's before then, but it will be whenever she is ready!

Q. How much does she have to weigh when she comes home?
A. There isn't a goal weight she needs to reach in order to come home.  Instead, she has to reach certain milestones, which are:
  • Maintains a normal body temperature while in an open crib (bassinet) for at least 48 hours
  • Nipple feeds successfully at all feedings from breast or bottle
  • Shows a steady weight gain for 2-3 days while on full feedings in an open crib (bassinet)
  • Has no other active medical conditions requiring hospitalization.
Q. Did you go back to work yet?
A. Yes, I went back to work 11/18 and Dad has been in school all semester.  I will still have a regular "maternity leave" when she comes home.

Q. How often do you visit?
A. At least one of us goes to visit her every day.  We stay as long as we can, generally at least a couple hours each day.  We can visit her at any time except during the nurses' shift changes, which is from 6:30-8 both AM and PM.  We can also call at any time for an update from the nurses.
