Just a Little Peanut

Day 47

Emma has still been a little bit up and down these days.  Yesterday she was put back on the SiPAP which is another small step backwards unfortunately, but it does seem to be helping her.  She also got another blood transfusion last night.  They stop her feeds when they give her the transfusion and instead keep her on just IV fluids.  Therefore, she needed to have two IV's put in - 1 for the fluids and 1 for the blood.  Her hermatocrit level was a little low and the infusion of oxygenated blood generally helps her satting too (how much oxygen saturation is in her blood).  So as of today she is doing better overall - her saturation is better and oxygen requirement on the SiPAP is lower too.  The doctors will give her a little time to rest and gain some more weight before trying the cannula again.  We know this is very typical for someone her size and that this is all to be expected, but we can't help feeling a little discouraged.  We were sort of hoping she was just going to keep coasting on the cannula, but for right now she needs a little more help.  She is still a little peanut after all, and in the grand scheme of things, she is doing amazingly well.

Emma is now up to 970 grams which is a little over 2 pounds, 2 ounces!  And she was measured today and is now 38 cm which is about 15 inches!  So she is definitely still growing which is very good.  She is just about on track for 30 weeks too.

  1. Emma's doing a tremendous job of growing--what a little trooper! She's lucky to have both of you, Kristen and Matt, to love her and be her cheering squad. Each day there is so much progress, from doubling her birth weight to adding 4" to her length--what amazing accomplishments for this little peanut! We know that, with her indomitable will, she'll continue to grow and thrive in the weeks ahead. We send our love, support, and best wishes to all of you! oxoxox
